Pete Alonso didn't break the bank but might have damaged the new Yankees closer.

Edwin Diaz was shaky in his appearance for the New York Mets on Wednesday. Over in Detroit, New York Yankees closer was an entire earthquake.

Williams is 0-1 on the year with a 12.00 ERA. Three of the four appearances have been an adventure. Starting with his Yankees debut on Opening Day where he locked down his lone save of the season, it took him 36 pitches to accomplish what he couldn’t against the Mets in Game 3 last October.

Fans were quick to turn but also gave him the benefit of the doubt. This is one of the best closers in the game after all! After Wednesday’s fiasco, fans are hyperbolically admitting Pete Alonso broke him.

Can you believe the Yankees changed their beard policy for this?

Williams surrendered 2 hits, 2 walks, and 3 earned runs in 0.2 innings against the Detroit Tigers in his latest meltdown. The Yankees won but it was a continued trend of him folding in the pressure. His previous outing tabbed him with the loss when Williams gave up the game-winning hit to Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham in extra innings. The run wasn’t charged to his middle-school aged ERA but it was a bad day nonetheless.

In fact, only when he pitched on April 4 with a 5-run lead has Williams stepped on the mound and not given up a hit or run. Control might’ve been a bit of an issue in that spotting. Only half of his 18 pitches were for strikes.

The memorable October 3, season-saving home run off the bat of Alonso was a surprise to everyone specifically because of how good Williams has been in his career. Whether working as a setup man or closer, he did plenty to make the Yankees want him this offseason.

If it’s any consolation, even if Williams is damaged goods, all it cost the Yankees was Nestor Cortes and their 5’7 infield prospect Caleb Durbin who played his way up the rankings but seems to have utility player abilities.

Did Alonso actually break Williams’ spirit? Let’s watch again and see. If after the fifth watch you don’t see it, try again.
