When people say Citi Field feels like October, what they really mean to say is it’s loud and awfully crowded. Sights from early on in 2024 included a lot of empty seats at Citi Field. Expectations for the New York Mets were tame. Not this year. They signed Juan Soto.
The Soto signing had a major impact in a lot of ways. None more so than in attendance.
Thanks to this jaw-dropping and historic free agent deal, Mets fans are showing up at a historic rate.

And the Mets fan keeps showing up because of how well the team is playing
It’s one thing to sell a lot of tickets in December and January. A whole new beast comes to life when the fans continually pack the home ballpark. Throughout April, May, and into June, the Mets have been playing winning baseball. Citi Field, in particular, has been a haven for them. Their home dominance has led to an outstanding 27-7 record to begin the year.
Last year’s Mets averaged 29,484 per home game. It was 17th in Major League Baseball. The huge jump in ticket sales undoubtedly had a lot to do with the Soto addition which convinced fans aplenty to buy season ticket packages during the holiday season. Even though Soto hasn’t fully lived up to expectations, the team has.
Some context is needed when looking at this ranking. Citi Field holds only 41,800 which makes it impossible to get any higher than fourth place on this list outside of some standing room only ticket sales. The giant ballpark for the Los Angeles Dodgers will routinely have them ranking first. Add in their championship defense, an immensely talented roster, success, and friendly weather, they’re nearly impossible to dethrone.
Showing up in the attendance ranking is all fine and good, but we know the real place we care about is in the MLB standings. A half-game better than the Detroit Tigers, the .652 winning percentage for the Mets leads the entire league. This year, the fans are showing up to see those wins. Summer is only getting started. We should see the average attendance go up even more with school out, warmer weather, and a first place team continuing to play well.
