The Ghost of NY Mets Injuries Past won’t be visiting Juan Soto this winter

The average New York Mets fan won’t have much rooting interest in the final scores of any Dominican Winter League game. Individual performances are what we care about far more. We want to see our guys do well.

We also don’t want to see certain players show up at all as anything more than spectators. The great fear with any Mets player participating in a non-MLB game is injury. We had Edwin Diaz get hurt in the 2023 WBC. The following winter, Ronny Mauricio blew out his ACL in the Dominican Winter League.

A prideful Dominican, Juan Soto was given permission by the Mets to participate in this year’s Dominican Winter League playoffs if the Tigres del Licey made it. Luckily for us, they were the first team eliminated, ending any chance of the Ghost of Christmas Past from visiting Soto this winter.

Hallelujah! That’s one less thing to worry about for Mets fans this winter

What are the chances in a handful of games we’d see Soto get hurt…pretty good if you ask me. Diaz’s injury was as fluky as it gets. In a light celebration that was as intense as the Hokey Pokey, the star closer missed an entire year as a result.

Exact details as to how much or how often Soto is allowed to play for the Tigres del Licey remains a bit of a mystery with one report from almost a year ago saying he can participate in 10 games.

It doesn’t take a NORAD scientist to understand why the Mets wouldn’t be openly campaigning about his availability. Mets fans are scared any time a player gets a haircut for fear of losing his ear leading to a miscommunication on a pop up 6 months later.

Soto’s current desire to play in the DWL will be an ongoing topic every offseason with the Mets. Our only solace is that it won’t be right now, leaving him 1% safer from getting hurt.

But please, for the love of all things Mets, don’t let him be the one to use a box cutter on Christmas morning to open up any gifts.
