3) Tyler Rogers
We’re getting a little more into the weed with Mets free agents after Alonso and Diaz. Two key pieces for several seasons, there isn’t much of a discussion other than not having the desire to pay a first baseman or closer. What can be up for a greater debate is if trade deadline acquisition Tyler Rogers is worth re-signing. His funky delivery and ability to do Pedro Feliciano things with his availability makes him one of the more intriguing players to wear blue and orange.
Rogers didn’t have a picture-perfect stint with the Mets. Although his ERA often escaped damage, there were plenty of times when he allowed inherited runners to score.
Rogers’ time with the Mets included a 2.30 ERA in 27.1 innings. A low strikeout rate and reliance on soft contact sometimes proved counterproductive. Specifically, it came back to hurt the Mets with inherited runners. Rogers allowed 5 of 8 to score against him. It wasn’t charged to his ERA, but did damage to his reputation.
The Mets will need to add some veteran bullpen help to their roster this offseason. Rogers, while imperfect, is someone to have a conversation with and about. He has been too quietly good and consistent to let walk away easily.
