2) Edwin Diaz

It has been clear for a long time that Alonso would opt out of the second year of his contract. Other than putting together a horrific season or getting hurt, it was always destined to test free agency again. As painful as it may have been, it’s the smart play. He’ll, at the very least, get a bump in pay for the 2026 season.

Not as obvious was the destiny of Edwin Diaz. A contract signed prior to 2023 included a player option following the 2025 season. Diaz has proven he needs to remain with the Mets. The important question that arises from this is what it’ll take to keep him here.

Diaz is already right there alongside Josh Hader as the highest paid closer in baseball. How much more can he possibly earn? With him, the length of his contract feels to be the bigger aspect. His salary does drop $3 million per year over the next two seasons. A slight increase back to the $21.5 million he took home in 2025 is probably all it will take with maybe a guarantee of four seasons.

Diaz pitched to a 1.63 ERA this past season with 28 saves. In a Mets uniform, it was his second truly superb season second to only the 2022 campaign which earned him his then-record-breaking contract for a relief pitcher. It’ll be difficult, if not impossible, to find someone as steady as Diaz in the ninth inning moving forward.
