MLB free agency is far from over. The Juan Soto domino didn’t cause the same kind of reaction as many believed it would. So much for the New York Mets trying to do a nice thing and get the stove flaming.
The Mets have diligently made efforts to replace or retain members of the 2024 roster. The good chemistry and talent is something they’d like to replicate. In fact, everything they’ve done up to this point suggests the strategy hasn’t changed much at all.
Of the remaining Mets free agents from last year, all six of these guys look like candidates to return for another go at the NL East, Los Angeles Dodgers, and World Series.
1) Pete Alonso
Start with the obvious one, why don’t we? Pete Alonso has been the most often mentioned name relating to the Mets these last few weeks. The homegrown slugging first baseman has had passive suitors. We’re in what feels like a free agency stalemate between him and the Mets whom many believe are the best destination for him.
The Mets went into the offseason with a whole lot of options at the position. Only about half of them have become unavailable. The idea of moving Mark Vientos to first base and using someone else or a combination of players at third base remains fully in play. It’s the worst news possible for Alonso. The Mets are likely to provide him with the best combination of money, popularity, and a chance to win.
Until the Mets sign or even trade for a corner infielder of significance, Alonso is going to be a match to continue calling Citi Field home.
