Because of how beloved the 2024 New York Mets team became, many fans were ready to run it back with a similar roster. Multiple Mets free agents remain available and continue to be a match for a return. This isn’t a theme for everyone. Already, two have been replaced with more likely on the way.
In this young MLB offseason, we’ve already seen the Mets go in a different direction at some positions/roles. Who has already been replaced and which player may soon find himself with no room for a return?
The Mets replaced Luis Severino with Frankie Montas
Luis Severino and Frankie Montas on the same roster together. It wouldn’t be the first time. The pair shared a New York Yankees locker room briefly.
They shouldn’t get a chance to catch up as members of the Mets. The two are quite similar but more importantly as the Mets look to fill out their rotation, there isn’t much of an improvement to the staff if Severino returns.
The next step for the Mets’ rotation plans needs to be piling in front of Montas, not beside or behind. A frontline ace and someone in the Sean Manaea class would be the ideal way to finish off the offseason and build a capable rotation.
Severino’s challenge is now to find a team willing to suffer the consequences of signing a player who rejected the qualifying offer. An offseason where Severino and the Mets flirt only to reunite in February seems less likely now that they have a righty who over the last two years has delivered close numbers. Combined in 2023 and 2024, Severino had a 1.6 WAR while Montas was right behind him at 1.4.
