Freddy Peralta has, as the kids might say, been very “mid” for the New York Mets this year. This was meant to be the trade to put them over or at least in the playoff discussion. Quite the opposite has occurred. Peralta has been their third best starting pitcher (out of three possible choices) and with an ERA that recently crept over 4.00, fans are disinterested in having him stick around beyond 2026.
There’s still a way to salvage this trade and it would begin by using Tobias Myers in the best way possible. Demoted after a string of poor outings, Myers has been in Syracuse this month with no sign they’ll do anything more than hand him the ball every couple of days. Myers has done nothing but pitch in relief aside from an opener role on Thursday when he lasted 2.2 innings.
Is there a plan to ever stretch him out as a starter or what?
The Mets haven’t handled Tobias Myers in the most beneficial way for anyone
The demotion caught a lot of fans off guard as Myers had been a useful piece in the bullpen. Since then, we’ve seen Joey Gerber promoted and multiple sightings of lefty Cionel Perez. Based on the way the Mets have used their pitching, Sean Manaea and David Peterson working as bulk guys, the need for Myers in the intended role felt a little crowded. Add in multiple dull appearances to finish off May and a 4.05 ERA on the year just 0.01 higher than Peralta and we can understand why they might want to hit the refresh button.
But the plan hasn’t changed and there isn’t any clarity as to what, if anything, ever will. Myers has experience as a starter and yet the Mets haven’t declared their intention to stretch him out. This is something they purposefully did in the spring and never returned to. Are they just disinterested or lack faith in him?
Yet to allow a run yet in Triple-A, Myers is performing well and, as the Mets put it, getting a more scripted schedule.

The problem with scripting appearances is that no one other than starters ever have anything scripted for them in the majors. What purpose is this serving?
Myers came into the year with one minor league option remaining. It’ll carry over into next year as long as he doesn’t spend 20 days in the minor leagues. Optioned on May 30, you can do the math. He has surpassed the 10-day minimum and with an appearance on Thursday, he wouldn’t likely be available again for the big league Mets until at least Sunday. He’d be an obvious candidate to swap places with Daniel Duarte by that point in the never-ending bullpen shuffle. But even if that does happen, what’s the point when no role has been defined or adjustment made?
A fourth starting pitcher we can count on is something the Mets need badly. Myers, who has done it before successfully with the Milwaukee Brewers in the recent past, couldn’t be a more obvious choice to try. He can’t possibly be worse than David Peterson.
