Former Mets player was one of many laughing at MLB writer's latest social media faux pas

The October return of #bob came out during yesterday's Mets game.

When you write about the New York Mets or even baseball in general, the one thing you should never get wrong is the name of the athletes. Spell it right. Pronounce it correctly. Pause and make sure you have your simple facts straight. These rules can belong anywhere in life. Getting someone’s name wrong is disrespectful. In some cases, it can just look embarrassing.

Unfortunately, we’re a shameless nation where being first is more important than being accurate. Typos do happen. Arson Judge will live in infamy. Not quite as recognized by baseball fans was Bob Nightengale’s error that former Mets catcher Tomas Nido was quick to have some fun with.

Nightengale is two decades behind. For the younger fans, Wilson Alvarez was a real person. He pitched mostly for the Chicago White Sox and finished his MLB career for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005. He is not related to Francisco Alvarez, the clear correct full name of the person #bob meant to reference.

This isn’t the first time Tomas Nido had fun with Bob Nightengale nor will it be the last

Before OMG, Grimace, or the rally pumpkin, there was #bob. Remember #bob? It was the token response for just about anything Nightengale would say on Twitter, in particular when it was wrong.

The origins go back to February 4, 2021 at 7:20pm when Nightganel tweeted that the Mets had a deal with Trevor Bauer. They actually didn’t. 15 minutes later, Nido tweeted out “Wtf Bob” and let it simmer.

The 2021 Mets didn’t have too many over the top gimmicks. Teasing Nightengale, who is known for some big misses with his reporting but more so his what I like to call “dad errors” with typing, was one of the strongest.

We all make mistakes and this one by Nightengale because of how dated it was.

What more fun tweets will Nightengale have about this series before it’s over? “Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ferris Buehler has served up a home run to Mets slugger Edgardo Alonso. Out comes the manager, Bip Roberts, to make a pitching change. He wants a fresh arm to face Ketel Marte.”
