The New York Mets will send at least one ex-player to the Hall of Fame next summer. Jeff Kent will head into Cooperstown for a much-overdue representation as one of the game’s best second basemen.
Mets fans won’t be saving up their PTO to see him inducted. His best years came with the San Francisco Giants. He was a pimple in Mets history who played well but was hardly Hall of Fame worthy in those early years.
What about others? Thanks to the team at the Baseball Hall of Fame tracker, we have an idea of who’s trending in the right direction. Through 28% of the votes going public, here’s where they stand:
Which Mets players have a shot at the Hall of Fame?
Carlos Beltran - 87.5%
Carlos Beltran is well ahead of the needed 75% for induction. There’s usually a fall off from the known ballots but even with 10% lost over the next three-fourths, he’s in good shape. Thanks to an underwhelming ballot and time to forgive him for involvement in the 2017 Houston Astros cheating scandal, expect him to go in.
Bobby Abreu - 40%
Bobby Abreu has some fascinating numbers, but was never regarded as one of the best outfielders during his era. If Kent is a pimple in Mets history, Abreu is the freckle behind an ear. He’s showing up well on the ballot but no sure thing to ever get in.
David Wright - 19.2%
A Hall of Fame candidate we all care about, David Wright is nowhere near Cooperstown-bound. He went from 6.2% to 8.1% on his two ballots thus far. He might be someone who lingers around for a few years. It’s hard to imagine he ever gets in.
Francisco Rodriguez - 14.2%
Francisco Rodriguez is one of those closers with good numbers yet hardly close to Hall of Fame worthy. He has gotten a chunk of votes and should probably stick around for a few more ballots.
Daniel Murphy - 0%
No way Daniel Murphy gets into Cooperstown, but I’d expect a single vote wouldn’t be out of the question as there often is a friend in the media who throws players like him a bone.
Rick Porcello - 0%
Remember the 2020 Mets? We’d like to forget, too. Rick Porcello spent one season with the Mets. Despite winning a Cy Young, he’s going to end up as one-and-done on the ballot.
Do we throw Matt Kemp on this list? He never played for the Mets in the majors but had 8 games in Syracuse during the 2019 season. He has yet to receive any votes.
