“All they do is sign our trash” or something to that effect. New York Yankees fans can’t help themselves but to bully the rest of the baseball world. While the New York Mets are taking Devin Williams and Luke Weaver away from them, they’re re-signing Amed Rosario and Paul Blackburn.
Yes, the same guy whom we never had any interest in playing for the Mets at the 2024 trade deadline or coming back in 2025 has signed a $2 million deal with the Yankees. MLB even put out what feels like a mocking post with the words “He’s back” to share the announcement.
Brian Cashman atrophied the muscle in any flexing Yankees fans can do on the Mets
The Yankees don’t have as much to do this offseason as the Mets, but woof! Buzz McAllister’s girlfriend looks better than what they’ve done so far.
Barely any additions, the Yankees gave Trent Grishman the qualifying offer and when he accepted seemed to corner themselves with an expensive outfielder coming off of a career year. It’s not the worst thing, but if it prevents them from re-signing Cody Bellinger or introducing Kyle Tucker to the Bronx as the next starting left fielder, it’s a tragic decision.
Blackburn pitched 7 games for the Mets last year and was DFA’d with a 6.85 ERA. He ended up with the Yankees exclusively in a bullpen role where he’d pitch in 8 games spanning 15.1 innings. The results were mildly better. He had a 5.28 ERA. This doesn’t even include his 1.1 innings in a postseason appearance when he was tagged for 4 earned runs.
In fairness, Blackburn had a run of 5 straight outings without a run allowed in September. The majority of damage was done in his debut when he allowed 7 to cross the plate in a “take one for the team” performance that lasted 3.1 innings. Interestingly, the Yankees didn’t use him in the way you’d expect with Blackburn never going more than 2 innings again.
This could very well be an attempt to completely reinvent Blackburn into a 1-2 inning at a time pitcher rather than a potential long man out of the bullpen. If so, maybe it can work after all. We’re still laughing. This is a team that has seemed to cry poverty and rather than get a more proven guy for a little more money they’re going to toy with this. For sanity’s sake of all Yankees fans out there, let’s hope there isn’t a late spring training twist when he gets into the starting rotation. At that point, Monument Park will need a plaque dedicated to Mets fans laughing.
