He wasn’t with the New York Mets long and his biggest claim to fame is giving Pete Alonso his nickname. Upon seeing the young Mets slugger and future home run king for a single season and career stand up and stretch, Todd Frazier connected Alonso’s appearance to what a Polar Bear looks like. Thus spake the Toddfather and a nickname was born.
Frazier is a regular on podcasts post-playing career and wasn’t too happy about the way the Mets let Alonso walk away. He questioned the Mets letting Alonso and Edwin Diaz walk as well as the trade of Brandon Nimmo. Having played with all three of them, and building enough of a big league resume to know what players might be thinking, his best point was about how non-Mets players could be feeling.
Questioning why anyone would want to join the Mets right now with no knowledge of what’s next and seeing how they move on from their beloved stars, his most damning quote was “...who would want to go there now knowing what they do?”
Todd Frazier has a point, only the boldest of players would want to join the Mets right now
The Mets haven’t had time to convince anyone new to come to the team since the delete button was pushed at the Winter Meetings. Trades took away the ability to choose and it does appear this is a direction the Mets will go in an attempt to rebuild their roster. Even when no-trade clauses may be involved, we should expect players in worse situations to openly accept a trade to the Mets.
In what felt like an attempt to throw a little bit of pocket sand at the Mets, it was reported out of Chicago how the Cubs were Devin Williams’ preferred choice. The Mets came with the better offer, convincing him to join the ball club as the lone significant free agent addition of the offseason thus far. Only he and Marcus Semien are regarded as the most impactful newcomers to the ball club.
New York isn’t for everyone. We know that. It may make it a little harder to convince some players to come here. However, one could argue that anyone turned off by the way the Mets have operated this offseason wouldn’t be a good match in the first place. They’ve yet to set their direction moving forward which is what has many fans, and Frazier, spiraling with dumbfoundment.
Not enough time has passed for the Mets to reveal the card they’ll play next. If Frazier is right, the Mets have a 7-2 offsuit in front of them.
