Former NY Mets player had a one-of-a-kind take while watching the MLB playoffs

Of all the observations during the MLB playoffs, this was one-of-a-kind.

Cameron Maybin didn’t spend a long time with the New York Mets. His 1 for 33 stretch with the 2021 team was the last he’d see of playing in Major League Baseball. It was the final of 15 seasons with 10 different ball clubs. His perspective on the game is unique. He has probably suited up alongside more fellow baseball players than most can claim becasue of how many different uniforms he wore. Even Yusuf Dikec doesn't hit the mark every time. In this case, Maybin was wide right.

The 38-year-old had a well-intended tweet glorifying the older days of baseball spanning his career from 2007-2021. See if you’re as eagle-eyed as others who were quick to point out the criticism.

Where have all of the glue-guy shortstops gone? Apparently still present as 12 of the 30 names he rattled off appeared in a MLB game in 2025.

There sure seems to be a lot more shortstop centerpieces than Cameron Maybin is giving credit

Not all of the players mentioned are still at shortstop even if they are active. It’s a little beyond the point. 12 of the 30 still being active with many, including Francisco Lindor for the Mets, credited as locker room leaders makes this take fizzle rather quickly.

All 12 may not be their team’s heartbeat, but there are certainly others who weren’t named who are. Bobby Witt Jr., Bo Bichette, Gunnar Henderson, and Elly De La Cruz would like a word. Jacob Wilson and Jeremy Pena are rising with the latter already owning a World Series MVP. Corey Seager, a shortstop Maybin did name, has two World Series MVPs as well. That makes for 3 of the last 6 at the position.

If there is a position that seems to lack the heartbeat within teams, it’s probably, oddly enough, center field where Maybin spent much of his career. Long gone are the days of Ken Griffey Jr., Willie Mays, and even Mike Trout. Now a position focused almost exclusively on defense with little care about the offensive production, that’s probably the position where you’d want to scratch your head and wonder where the leaders went.

Maybin’s critique is exclusive to the postseason, apparently. This just makes it odder with several names he listed appearing in the MLB playoffs this year. Of the current four teams, only Mookie Betts, a former outfielder, is playing regularly with Bichette sidelined.

Fans were quick to hand Maybin a loss with his puzzling takeaway.

Major League Baseball is imperfect and has a few missing pieces. The absence of top shortstops isn't one of them.
