MLB Trade Rumors put out their annual list of the top 50 free agents and predictions from four of their regular contributors on where each will sign. It’s a good mix of opinion and helps guide fans into what could very well happen. Reading through it as a New York Mets fan, you might come away surprised what they predict for Edwin Diaz.
All four predict Diaz signs with…not the Mets.
Wait a second. What do they know that we don’t?
MLB Trade Rumors is convinced Edwin Diaz is leaving the Mets
There wasn’t much of a reason as to why Diaz will jump away from the Mets. The thinking must be that David Stearns doesn’t pay closers. Coming off an offseason when he paid Juan Soto more than any other MLB player in history, it’s difficult to relate much of what he did with the Milwaukee Brewers into how he’ll operate with the Mets.
The four were a bit torn as to where Diaz would go. The Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and New York Yankees were all named. Each team could be justified. However, not all have the necessity to make him possibly their one and only qualifying offer rejector added to the roster. The Yankees, for instance, already have David Bednar. Are they really going to splurge on the crosstown rival closer?
Predictions are made to be wrong. Members of the RIsing Apple team put out our predictions. All 6 participants said the exact opposite for Diaz. We have him coming back to the Mets.
Diaz’s market is an interesting one considering how few teams have a closer need on top of how many would pay such a large price to have him. Considering where the Blue Jays finished the season, that’s a sneaky good pick. The Giants, as well, weren’t a team that immediately came to mind.
It’s potentially a very different offseason for Diaz this time around than it was following the 2022 season. He signed his deal before actually becoming a MLB nomad.
Never a given he’d be back, we should hope it doesn’t drag out. Don’t give other teams a chance to have a change of heart or an owner the opportunity to win the PowerBall.
