Pete Alonso sounds like he's divorcing NY Mets fans after getting the dog last week

Pete Alonso’s return to Citi Field last week was both controversial and a show of love. New York Mets fans cheered for him more than the home team. It was a statement that some believe crossed a line.

Alonso handled himself well, but it sure seems like he has found somebody else. After such an amazing show of love by the Mets fans, Alonso went full steam ahead into catering to those still showing up to Baltimore Orioles games. He led the exit from the dugout to tip caps to the fans and shared a quote that practically raptured the love Mets fans still have for him.

It’s very Bryce Harper of Alonso to embrace his new team while being a little cringy. Harper went from the Washington Nationals to the Philadelphia Phillies and was a bit guilty of it. While we think of him as a Phillies player now, the uniform change beginning in 2019 was unique because of his large contract and going from one division rival to another. Harper became a Philadelphia icon immediately and wearing Phantic-inspired cleats while acting like he was always destined for Philly seems very much the way Alonso has behaved this year.

The timing of the quote is a little curious, but not so insulting. The Mets just happened to have him in town right before the final Orioles homestand. We won’t know for sure if Alonso would have been so insistent that he was always destined for Baltimore if he had a trip to Citi Field coming up afterward.

It almost feels like a heel turn. It didn’t come out of nowhere either. As the three games against the Mets went on, Alonso’s quotes became more and more questionable. Suggesting it didn’t matter if he was at Citi Field or Yankee Stadium raised eyebrows.

With most athletes, the more they say the more trouble they can get themselves into. It’s rare the opposite is true. A guy like Andy Green is one of those rare exceptions. The more we hear from him, the more fans like.

How do Orioles fans actually feel about him? Incredibly productive in year one and everything they wanted, it did little to help the team win. Barely better than last season, Alonso wasn’t their problem, but also far from the solution. Their attendance was up slightly by 26K. It’s barely a dent.

Alonso’s return to Citi Field on a day that officially eliminated the Mets from the playoffs was the powderkeg moment in a frustrating season for fans. Surely, after quotes like these, the average Mets fan is just about finished. WFAN’s Evan Roberts, an outspoken David Stearns critic who wanted Alonso back, voiced how finished he is with the Polar Bear after the latest developments.

Something tells me he’s not close to being alone.

Brandon Nimmo made the suggestion that the Mets wanted a divorce from him hence his willingness to waive his no-trade clause. Now it’s sounding like Alonso is filing for one with Mets fans.
