The Jose Iglesias accomplishment NY Mets fans never talk about

Jose Iglesias remains fresh in our minds and yet one accomplishment never gets brought up.

We didn’t know it but the turning point for the 2024 New York Mets came on May 31, 2024, when Jose Iglesias made his debut in a 10-9 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. That victory helped give the Mets a victory over a team they’d tie for the final NL Wild Card spot. By virtue of a tie-breaker, the Mets went to the playoffs and the Diamondbacks didn’t.

As significant was the Mets debut of the forever-loved Jose Iglesias. Just 1 for 4 in the game, with no runs scored or RBI despite the double-digits the Mets put up, his presence marked a change within the clubhouse and eventually the standings.

It can’t be understated how much Iglesias helped turn the Mets’ season around. He hit .337 and was a constant clutch bat in the lineup. You remember the timely hitting and the music. Do you recall how his regular season ended?

Jose Iglesias finishing the 2024 regular season with a 22-game hitting streak is his forgotten Mets achievement

Iglesias was hitless on September 3 against the Boston Red Sox. He wouldn’t have another game in the regular season without a hit for the rest of the year. From September 6 through the finale against the Atlanta Braves, Iglesias never had a game without at least one hit. The result was a 22-game hitting streak.

September was a strange month for the Mets in 2024. They regularly teetered between looking like a contender and not. Iglesias had 36 hits in the month, far surpassing Mark Vientos who was second with 21. Iglesias batted .371 and drove in just 4 runs. His bigger contribution was how much his teammates picked him up. He crossed the plate a team-high 16 times.

The 22-game hitting streak was huge with J.D. Martinez going 6 for 55 all month and trade deadline addition Jesse Winker 3 for 42. The Mets relied on sensational pitching in that final month and the occasional timely hit. A near-no-hitter in Toronto that eventually became a win stands out as one of those magical games where they shouldn’t have won it but did.

Iglesias never made it back to the Mets to extend his hitting streak. In 2025 with the San Diego Padres, it ended with a hitless debut in their third game of the season.

The 22-game hitting streak to end 2024 doesn’t get referenced much, if at all, because of the bigger picture task at hand for the Mets. Making the playoffs was paramount and reached. Credit Iglesias for clogging up the bases in those final three weeks as one of the biggest reasons.
