NY Mets fans will hate this Braves trade deadline idea that might break all of us

Fortunately, the 51-51 Texas Rangers, as pathetic of a record as it is to lead a division, do lead the AL West. They’re a half game better than the Seattle Mariners and a few more up on the Houston Astros who have yet to make their run. Someone will have to take the division. The American League still has only five teams over .500 with three coming from the AL East, two in the AL Central, and no participants in the AL West.

As of right now, the Rangers are trade deadline buyers even if it’s lightly. However, if given the chance to move on from the $37 million owed to deGrom for next season, they’d probably jump at it. At 7-6 with a 3.76 ERA this season, deGrom is finally showing his age, 38.

The post-Mets relationship with deGrom is complicated for a number of reasons. He finally made his Citi Field return in 2025 in a game where Jonah Tong was shellshocked before deGrom even took the mound for the first time. He won a championship with the Rangers in year one, but was sidelined for that run and most of the year. A combined 9 starts in 2023 and 2024, it wasn’t until 2025 when he began to prove his worth. At 12-8 with a 2.97 ERA, he was the 8th place Cy Young finisher.

deGrom’s most recent outing, while coming off of a non-IL injury stint, occurred 13 days after his last appearance. He exited after 4.2 innings and 5 runs charged against him.

On the surface, Atlanta may have several distinct advantages when it comes to deGrom. Although Georgia has property taxes and Texas doesn’t, Florida Man deGrom would be closer to home. He’d reunite with ex-Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner as well. Most importantly for his legacy, he’d join a ready-made team capable of winning it all.

The Rangers play four against the Seattle Mariners this weekend. You have rooting interest if you don’t want deGrom wearing a Braves uniform.
