The New York Mets had no intention of holding Amazin’ Day every offseason. It was officially announced this week that the lack of information about a new event was planned well in advance. We can understand why. As popular of an event as it was last offseason, the biggest story was how the Mets made it all about the club’s need to bring back Pete Alonso.
The Mets bent (so did Scott Boras) and everything seemed honkydory. This offseason hasn’t gone quite as smoothly. If there was another Amazin’ Day scheduled, you can bet these would be the three things fans would be complaining about most other than parking and prices.
1) The Mets need to sign Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, this guy, and this other player, too
The lack of premium additions to the Mets roster would have created a potential powder keg at this year’s Amazin’ Day. Fans would have been demanding the club sign Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, and probably a few other remaining free agents sitting out there. Last year’s event took place on January 25 so there could conceivably be enough time in the next two weeks for them to make that splash everyone has been waiting for.
If not, this year’s non-existent event would have been all about what the Mets still need to do. It’s probably for the best that this weekend doesn’t have some sort of celebration about the Mets. The current structure of the team doesn’t exactly get the majority of fans riled up.
Can you blame us? Looking at the roster, there are massive holes. Fans are holding out hope for something better to come along. The circumstances from start to finish with this team has created an ill feeling of uncertainty.
Even after signing Juan Soto, fans were still thirsty for more at last year’s Amazin’ Day. Steve Cohen thought dealing with Scott Boras was frustrating; try Mets fans who aren’t convinced Jorge Polanco or Marcus Semien won’t be any good.
