Sometimes you can tell which sports someone falls most closely by the statistics they value. Jeff Skversky, an apparent sports and newscaster according to his X profile, is definitely a basketball and football fan before baseball. In comparing the newest New York Mets third baseman Bo Bichette to Philadelphia Phillies’ Alec Bohm, he used a way of looking at stats that doesn’t work in a 162 game schedule.
Sversky went baseball statistics per game. Points per game works in the NBA. Yards per game can even work in the NFL for a quarterback. Home runs per game? WAR? You need to get out a calculator.
There’s no comparison Bo Bichette to Alec Bohm and even if you do, there’s one clear winner
A 0.028 WAR per game from Bichette versus .007 from Bohn is already 4 times better. It’s probably around that time you need to stop and reevaluate.
The assertion of how bad of a defensive player Bichette has been at shortstop is fair. The fact that he still rates so much higher in WAR than Bohm only furthers the case of how much better he has been in his career.
Undoubtedly, the better comparison is per 162 games. Let’s get there in a moment. Let’s just look at the WAR where Bichette has 21 WAR in his career in 749 games. Bohm is at 5.3 in 719 games while playing an “easier” position.
An .806 OPS versus .743 is significant. There isn’t a whole lot Bohm has done better in his career compared to Bichette. Bichette hits more home runs, drives in more runs, and steals more bases. His OAA sucks but his career defensive WAR is 2.2 at shortstop. Bohm is -4.7 at third base.
Bohm’s only advantage over Bichette might be his eye for parabolic microphones. This isn’t a kept statistic, but if Phillies fans want to feel better about their third base situation, some clever digging into Bichette’s career and no run-ins with one can help make Bohm look a little better.
Unfortunately, Sversky’s argument seems to be that Bichette isn’t worth 4x as much money as Bohm when the statistics say he actually is. Some fans just don’t like any major contract. Is Bichette overpaid? You betchya he is. Based purely on the numbers, its market value if you want to compare him to Bohm.
