Wait, what did the LA Dodgers promise Edwin Diaz if he left the NY Mets?

They can't do that, can they?

Edwin Diaz leaving the New York Mets this offseason isn’t something fans think about daily. This week, with the Mets facing the Los Angeles Dodgers, it’s an impossible topic to ignore.

The Athletic’s Katie Woo shared a few of the details behind the signing. Aside from a mention of Eric Stonestreet, the most fascinating thing from the negotiations seemed to be one of the promises the Dodgers made to Diaz.

"The Dodgers told me if I came to Los Angeles and we have the chance to sign you, we will make you a Hall of Famer."

Did you see it? “...we will make you a Hall of Famer.” That’s…that’s not how it works. That's not how any of this works.

Edwin Diaz continues to share strange reasons why he chose the Dodgers over the Mets

Diaz never actually said but it has been speculated that he left the Mets for a number of reasons including the dismissal of pitching coach Jeremy Hefner as well as the signing of Devin Williams and the team’s lack of communication with him about that decision. Scorned by the Metropolitans, he left for a higher salary with the best team in baseball.

It doesn’t much matter why Diaz left. Even throwing in how his brother Alexis raved about the facilities seems like a tough rationalization. In the end, money was what he wanted and as close to whatever the Mets would offer.

The Mets’ final offer wasn’t far behind what he eventually signed to join the Dodgers. Never giving the Mets a chance to beat it, this seemed to be about things other than simple cash. Diaz wanted the easiest path toward winning. The Dodgers have been that.

A Hall of Fame promise by the Dodgers is a brand new one. It couldn’t have possibly been meant to become a member of their organizaton’s Hall of Fame. His deal isn’t long enough to guarantee something like that. And even if he was to become a Hall of Fame player, his years with the Mets would put him in line to wear their cap into Cooperstown, right?

It’s a lost cause to try to decipher all of the real reasons why Diaz fled New York in favor of Los Angeles. It’s probably much simpler than anything Diaz has ever publicly stated.
