It initially looked like a blessing in disguise that the New York Mets didn't bring back closer Edwin Diaz, who had a disastrous regular season in his first year with the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, Diaz looks back to his old self since coming off the IL in September.

In his final five appearances last month, Diaz pitched five shutout innings, struck out nine batters and only walked one. He has looked even sharper in the postseason, hurling three shutout innings, allowing just one hit and notching three strikeouts with two saves in the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves. Opposing Atlanta hitters batted just .100 against Diaz in the series, as he saved the final clinching game.

Why the Dodgers can get the last laugh with Edwin Diaz

The Mets were likely breathing a sigh of relief after not retaining Diaz given how poorly he pitched in the regular season. Diaz had by far the worst campaign of his career, posting a 8.68 ERA with four blown saves in just 21 appearances. Not to mention, Diaz missed three months after undergoing surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow. He would also miss an additional month with neck inflammation as well.

All of that being said, it's the Dodgers who can get the last laugh on the Mets because Diaz is now flourishing for them on the biggest stage. The Dodgers are hunting for their third consecutive World Series title and Diaz is their closer. This means he will likely be playing a big part in their success if the team ultimately pulls off a three peat this October.

The Dodgers signed Diaz to a three-year. $69 million deal in free agency this past offseason. The Mets were caught off guard by the move, as they made a significant attempt to re-sign their franchise closer. So, the Dodgers got the first laugh, the Mets got the second laugh and now Los Angeles can get the final laugh if Diaz helps lead them to another World Series championship, which is looking likely at this point.

Diaz has two more years left on his deal, and he is obviously one of the best closers in the game when healthy. The Mets replaced Diaz with right-hander Devin Williams, who struggled in his first season in Queens with a 4.43 ERA in 44 appearances. If Diaz pitches the Dodgers to a third straight title, and Williams falters again next season, the Mets might be regretting their decision altogether.
