A unique MLB Draft in an even stranger year, the pandemic forced many changes upon us. The MLB season went from 162 games to 60. The minor league season was wiped out completely. The MLB Draft dropped to only five rounds. The New York Mets would actually have six selections.
Some drafts are impressive because of the talent they bring. Others are most recognized for a steal. This draft, right now, is a completely empty one for the Mets. All six players taken are already gone.
Round 1 – Pete Crow-Armstrong
Traded to the Chicago Cubs in the summer of 2021, this high-profile prospect is on the verge of becoming someone to truly haunt the franchise. Brodie Van Wagenen’s prized outfield prospect only played a handful of games for the organization before getting dealt to Chicago for two months of Javier Baez and a year and a half of Trevor Williams.
Round 2 – J.T. Ginn
Another player involved in a trade (that’s a theme here) was J.T. Ginn. The club’s second rounder went to the Oakland Athletics prior to the 2022 season in exchange for Chris Bassitt.
Round 2 – Isaiah Greene
The really good news about the trade involving Isaiah Greene is the Mets are still benefiting from the deal. He was one of the players sent to Cleveland for Francisco Lindor. He’s a bit lost in the minor leagues at the moment.
Round 3- Anthony Walters
The least known on this list, if you Google his name it might try to fill in “is he alive?” for you as it did for me. After a little digging, Anthony Walter was released in 2021 after hitting .151 in St. Lucie and .161 in Brooklyn. He joined the Colorado Rockies for the 2022 season where he’d hit only .177. Last spotted in professional ball representing Boise back in 2023, he managed to collect some pretty good numbers there. It’s a bit curious as to why the Mets drafted him. His college numbers weren’t very good in a limited sample, slashing .228/.313/.284 with one home run in 149 plate appearances. Who guessed this story would have more information about Walters than anyone else?
Round 4 – Matthew Dyer
You guessed it. Matthew Dyer’s time with the Mets ended via trade. He was paired with Tommy Hunter at the 2021 trade deadline when they were sent to the Tampa Bay Rays for Rich Hill. He hasn’t done a whole lot in the minors since.
Round 5 – Eric Orze
Finally, there’s Eric Orze. The only guy drafted in 2020 to actually play for the Mets, he followed the same route out of New York as Dyer. Orze was traded back in November 2024 for Jose Siri to the Rays. Logic tells us that this would be the only draft in franchise history where the last player taken by the team is the lone one to make it to the big leagues in their uniform.
