Moving down: Ryne Stanek is reminding Mets fans what he was in the regular season last year

Ryne Stanek’s Thursday implosion had many fans turning their backs on him yet again. An unstable arm in the team’s bullpen, Stanek has now blundered in two straight appearances.

It began with a run allowed versus the New York Yankees in a poor outing. Fortunately, the Mets clobbered their Big Apple siblings with a 12-6 win. Stanek’s shaky outing was forgotten quickly. The same didn’t happen when he walked 4 in his 0.2 innings while taking a loss against the Baltimore Orioles. He has now walked 6 in his last 1.2 innings, driving his walk rate up to 5.1 BB/9 on the season.

Amazing in the postseason for the Mets, the regular season wasn’t nearly as charming. In 16.1 innings, Stanek finished with a 6.06 ERA. Worth -0.2 WAR (for whatever that’s worth), he’s already at -0.6 this season.

Stanek’s year could be spun a couple of ways. He has a 3.75 FIP to suggest he has been unlucky. But how can someone with a 1.54 WHIP and 85 ERA+ be the victim of some weak balls dropping in and whatnot? Stanek has somehow allowed more hits and more walks per inning this season than he did during his brief time with the Mets in 2024. The bases have been jammed up for him this year with the difference being his ability to work out of the trouble; or having another reliever help him out.
