Moving down: Tyrone Taylor is showing us why he isn’t a center field solution
Aside from his RBI double in game one of the Mets’ doubleheader on Thursday versus the Baltimore Orioles, Tyrone Taylor has done very little offensively this month. He’s 2 for 26 with both hits going for two bases, oddly enough. I’ve spent much of the year defending Taylor whenever I could. Enough is enough. The Mets cannot afford to have him in the lineup regularly if his output is going to have him trending water barely above the Mendoza Line.
Center field is a debated need for the Mets at the trade deadline. With alternative Jeff McNeil putting up Baby Mets numbers (he’s slashing .219/.324/.313 this month), it’s becoming more difficult to justify a situation where they continue to swap starts. No rehab in sight for Jose Siri to come and offer them the two extremes he’s capable of, it’s becoming more apparent that maybe the Mets can’t just rely on the spectacular defense Taylor gives them.
Taylor was already as close to the bottom of the Mets depth chart as it gets. He has confirmed there is no reason for him to ever hit higher than eighth in the order; a spot he’ll only get rewarded with because of the lack of offense from the catchers.
