David Peterson continues to be the club’s most reliable starting pitcher

Oh, baby. David Peterson is a stud. This month he has gone 2-0 with a 1.05 ERA. Accomplishing this with 18 strikeouts and a very so-so 1.13 WHIP is impressive but also a testament to how willing he is to pitch to what works for him. He’s the king of ground balls.

Ball to ground contact is what has helped Peterson go longer in games. He isn’t trying to strike you out. He wants you to weakly chop one over to Francisco Lindor at shortstop. After Saturday’s game, he now has a 55.4% ground ball percentage on the season. It is the best of his career.

Peterson now logged the same 121 innings he had in 2024 with the exact number of strikeouts (101) and hits allowed (110). He has faced 7 fewer batters overall, given up one less run and unearned, and has a few other statistics that so closely mirror last year’s breakout performance.

One more positive spin is he has reached these milestones in one fewer start. The team’s best workhorse is averaging just a tad under 6 innings per start. He hasn’t had an outing in July with more than one earned run given up. He is trending toward being a potential Game One playoff starter in the postseason.
