Ronny Mauricio isn’t as explosive as we had hoped

The one thing Ronny Mauricio has that none of the other young players does is he has yet to put together any truly productive stretch. Baty might have the flattest line with no truly great stint with the Mets either, but it’s Mauricio who has felt like the biggest disappointment thus far.

July hasn’t been kind to Mauricio. A solo home run has accounted for his lone RBI. He’s hitting .225/.311/.350 this month, practically replicating June’s poor results when he wrapped up slashing .224/.288/.388. He had a real chance to do damage against left-handed pitchers in lieu of Baty. Unfortunately, this young switch hitter has been unplayable against them. He is just 3 for 27 without an extra-base hit. That’s just a .111 batting average.

Mauricio could be considered by some as the young Mets infielder with the most to offer in a trade. The upside is there and has been for a good half-decade. He hit well in Triple-A. All that’s missing is an extended period of success in the majors. Luisangel Acuna showed it in September of last season and even at the start of 2025. Mauricio cooled off immediately upon facing big league pitching.

Patience is running thin with Mauricio. So is the amount of time the Mets have to decide if he’s a part of their future or not. A lengthy demotion will erase his final minor league option, putting him in a spot where he’d either need to be on next year’s major league roster or face getting DFA’d.
