Luisangel Acuna moved down the depth chart

The backup infielder spot on the Mets roster seemed like it was Luisangel Acuna’s to lose. And lose it he did. Brett Baty outshined him this spring in every way possible. Criticism of Acuna’s worth ethic straight from Francisco Lindor only solidified the truth: the kid needs to work harder to establish himself as a regular in the majors.

Upon the injury to Jeff McNeil, Acuna should have capitalized on the opportunity to be the default choice. Instead, the Mets are itching to make an upgrade.

Acuna’s fall is nothing fresh. A poor season in Triple-A where the team only promoted him out of absolute necessity had him already crawling toward the doghouse. No longer was he anywhere near the number one prospect in the system. As subjective of a debate as it is, he is much more average than once believed.

There’s no denying Acuna has talent and a purpose. However, his poor spring results have let him slide down the depth chart with a steep uphill battle before he can regain his status as one of the future Mets studs.
