3 former Brewers players we don’t want David Stearns to reunite with on the NY Mets

Figurative matches for the Mets, it's better to avoid these ex-Brewers.

2) Luis Urias

One can make the case the Mets are in need of a veteran infielder. Luis Urias, who played with the Brewers under Stearns for a couple of seasons, is one of the available options. Mostly a second baseman/third baseman, he’d be a half-way decent bench option. The problem is the Mets have more than enough infielders. The things we’d expect Urias to do well, they may do better.

Many of the young Mets infielders failed to prove they are big league ready as hitters. Defensively, they got strong seasons out of Luisangel Acuna and Ronny Mauricio. Mauricio, in particular, feels like a guy who could be a late-inning defensive replacement at third base with regular at-bats against right-handed pitchers. He mashed them and collapsed versus lefties.

The Mets tried replacing Jose Iglesias on the roster last year with Nick Madrigal whose spring training injury eliminated him from the picture before Opening Day. It made more sense last year. This season, the roster feels more clogged than ever.

Not completely out of the question, Urias just doesn’t have enough defensive or offensive skills to justify his place on the roster. He’s not a quick runner like Acuna. He doesn’t have the offensive upside as Mauricio. He isn’t even as good of a fielder as either of them.

There may be others out there who could take this role. Urias isn’t it.
