3 former Brewers players we don’t want David Stearns to reunite with on the NY Mets

Figurative matches for the Mets, it's better to avoid these ex-Brewers.

We’re going to always get into the habit of thinking David Stearns will reunite with players he knew in the past from his days with the Milwaukee Brewers. It’s a fair assumption. In two years with the New York Mets, he has regularly added players he signed, traded for, or claimed off of waivers. Many were lower level like Pablo Reyes and Mike Brousseau. The anticipation of a bigger ex-Brewers player to come to New York will remain intact as long as there are candidates out there.

Last offseason it was Corbin Burnes. This winter, it’ll be guys like Devin Williams leading the charge. Williams is a debatable option. Unacceptable as an Edwin Diaz replacement, he’d make for a fine right-handed setup man the Mets might be buying low on.

What about those ex-Brewers we don’t want any part of? Conceivable fits based on the structure of the Mets roster, it’s an easy pass on these three players.

1) Trent Grisham

The idea of Trent Grisham wasn’t appealing even before the New York Yankees gave him a qualifying offer. Upon the offer, the Yankees completely eliminated any chance of the Mets signing Grisham. New York isn’t about to lose two draft picks and international bonus slot money to add him.

Grisham had a breakout season at the plate for the Yankees last season that, if all you did was look at those numbers, would make sense for the Mets. Center field is one of their most unanswered positions. Carson Benge is apparently getting an opportunity to compete for a job this spring. Even if he was removed, Grisham felt like the exact opposite of Williams: buying on a high.

Center field is a position Stearns has yet to nail down for the Mets. Year one was Harrison Bader and Tyrone Taylor with the latter stealing the job late in the season. Last season, Taylor took a step back. We regularly saw Jeff McNeil in center field for the sake of not having a .200 hitter play 162 games. The trade for Cedric Mullins was disastrous. We weren’t even sure Jose Siri existed. Then he played his way off of the roster after only a handful of September games.

The Mets should go internal and minor at center field. No Grisham reunion with Stearns ever made sense.
