NY Mets’ Craig Kimbrel release should send a message to these 3 players

The Mets aren't letting and shouldn't let underperformers linger on the roster.

The Craig Kimbrel experiment is no more. The New York Mets have DFA’d the ageless one after 15 innings and a 6.00 ERA. Some would say it was overdue.

The release surprises no one as this was all a mad science experiment from the beginning. Cheap and with low expectations, this was bound to be the outcome.

The quick hook sends a warning to these three now ex-teammates who need to do a lot more if they want to keep their jobs.

The Craig Kimbrel release is a warning for these teammates not doing a whole lot

Sean Manaea is the pricy player to dump after Craig Kimbrel

Sean Manaea will cost a lot more to send into free agency. Between this year and next, $50 million was owed to him. The Steve Cohen-led Mets haven’t been super eager to create dead money that extends beyond the current year. Manaea, with a 6.26 ERA, hasn’t transitioned well at all into his bullpen role. Yet to start a game for the Mets despite a long list of injuries to the starting staff, Steve Cohen greenlighting his the Mets cutting bait can become a must if this performance continues.

Tyrone Taylor isn’t doing enough of the good stuff this season

Tyrone Taylor is hitting only .189 with a .207 OBP. A clutch home run versus the New York Yankees, along with two others, have helped him reach 3 on the year to already surpass last season’s total. Taylor hasn’t measured well defensively this year and with Nick Morabito already on the roster, the clock should start ticking on him. First, Morabito needs to start hitting. If he does, the Kimbrel release is a sure sign they won’t be so hesitant to send Taylor onto the waiver wire once they start to get some healthy bodies back. Rating with a -2 OAA this year, he hasn't been the defensive master he was in the past.

Hayden Senger is only here because there’s nobody else

Would the Mets actually DFA Hayden Senger? They’ve been proactive about adding to their catcher depth with players like Austin Barnes and Ben Rortverdt brought in during the offseason. Barnes was released and Rortverdt is toiling away in the minor leagues. The catching depth for the Mets isn’t great after Francisco Alvarez and Luis Torrens. Senger, with a .125 batting average and little upside could always become the victim of a roster crunch if the Mets are able to add someone else either through trade, waiver claim, or free agency.
