The New York Mets are still in need of a first baseman after letting Pete Alonso walk in free agency last year. That's where 27-year-old Japanese superstar Teruaki Sato comes in, as he will be posted by the Hanshin Tigers this winter. Teams will have a 45-day window to sign the lefty hitting slugger, and the Mets should be all over him.

The Mets heavily scouted Sato in Japan during the regular season, including president of baseball operations David Stearns himself. Sato had another big campaign for the Tigers, slashing .306/.383/.609 with a .991 OPS, 39 home runs and 106 RBI in 143 games. Those numbers made him the ninth player in NPB history to win the Triple Crown.

The Mets should absolutely add Sato this offseason and move him to first base. But the reality of the situation is that he will be highly sought after, so we're going to take a look at the four teams who could be the Mets' biggest competition for Sato.

The biggest threats to the Mets to sign Teruaki Sato

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees desperately need a third baseman, which is Sato's natural position. The Ryan McMahon experiment has been an abysmal one, and the Yankees could use another big slugger in their lineup to complement Aaron Judge, Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and Luis Garcia Jr. next season. The Yankees' offense is already very lefty heavy, but Sato's bat would be ideal for the short porch in right field. Sato has hit a combined 79 homers the past two seasons for the Tigers, and that type of power would make a major impact for the Yankees.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies could look to fill first base or third base to replace Alec Bohm, who is a free agent this winter. If the Phillies were to sign Sato, they could stick him at third and move Bryce Harper back to first base, or put him at first and keep Harper in right field. By adding Sato, the Phillies would have three big boppers in their lineup in Sato, Harper and Kyle Schwarber. It would also minimize their need for outfield help ahead of the 2027 season.

San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres could lose breakout first baseman Ty France in free agency this offseason. While third base is occupied by Manny Machado, Sato would be the perfect replacement for France at first base if the Padres let him walk. A lineup of Sato, Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill would be a strong one in San Diego. The Padres also have the west coast advantage, which could help them land Sato since San Diego is closer to Japan, as opposed to the east coast.

Los Angeles Angels

Don't count out the Los Angeles Angels as a dark horse team for Sato. The Angels are under new ownership after Stan Kroenke agreed to purchase controlling interest of the club for $4 billion in September. Once upon a time, the Angels, under then majority owner Arte Moreno, made a big splash by signing another Japanese superstar in Shohei Ohtani. They could use a big addition in their infield and Sato would be the perfect fit. Like the Padres, the Angels share the same west coast advantage as well.
