Edwin Diaz broke New York Mets fans hearts by going to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The entire Mets community is in mourning. Some want David Stearns to face the music. Others are bewildered with dumbfoundment as to how this could have happened.
Someone who knows exactly how he feels is ex-Mets coach Eric Chavez. Although his interactions with Diaz probably weren’t extensive, Diaz throwing past bats rather than swinging with one, Chavez had some strong feelings.
Expressed on Instagram, it only took him two letters, repeating three times, to show his feelings. A bitmoji with the words "HA HA HA" was what he posted over the announcement.
“Ha Ha Ha” is how Eric Chavez feels about the Mets losing Edwin Diaz
Chavez didn’t win many Mets fans during his time as the hitting coach, bench coach, and then hitting coach again. An outspoken staff member over the last two seasons in particular, he often had to take the blame for the lack of progression from hitters such as Brett Baty and Francisco Alvarez.
Chavez has been on a bit of a campaign since getting fired. Any chance he gets to mock the Mets, he has. When it was announced in October that the Mets had three Silver Slugger finalists, he posted “Take that in” as a response on Instagram to a post celebrating the honor. Fans were quick to point out how the three were finalists and/or winners in previous years. He didn’t exactly turn Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, and Juan Soto into stars. They already were.
It’s a rough day to be a Mets fan with Diaz parting for the Dodgers and little explanation in the immediate aftermath. Why didn’t they go to a fourth year?
The 2025 Mets clearly weren’t cohesive if Diaz left so abruptly, former coaches are mocking the team, and the dismantling of the ball club has created some early offseason chaos. The Mets lost the soul of their bullpen, in part by choice. They couldn’t wait to sign Devin Williams and await a final decision from Diaz. They went beyond what many would have done to add Williams to be a setup man. Now they may be stuck with him as the closer.
And you better believe the first time he blows a save, Chavez will put his life on pause to give us a “Tee Hee Hee” on Instagram.
