Everytime Pete Alonso hits a home run in 2026, a New York Mets fan gets a throbbing headache. He hit his first in his third spring training at-bat, having all of the David Stearns haters questioning every choice the POBO has made in his entire life.
Alonso will be a talking point throughout the entirety of the 2026 season and beyond. He’ll be measured against anyone who plays first base or hits in the middle of the lineup, rightfully or not.
It can be a lonely feeling to see one of your favorite players and franchise icons suit up for another ball club. The circumstances aren’t entirely the same and yet Toronto Blue Jays fans should be having some of those same emotions about Bo Bichette.
Pete Alonso is to Mets fans what Bo Bichette will be to the Blue Jays
Alonso and Bichette both debuted in 2019 and gave their former clubs 7 years of service. Bichette played significantly fewer games, in part because he didn’t debut until mid-2019. A half-season missed in 2024 didn’t help his games total.
The two don’t compare as players, Alonso is a challenger for a home run title every year and Bichette as someone who’ll hit .300 and lead the league in hits. Bichette was always a little overshadowed in terms of importance in comparison to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The same could be said about Alonso and Francisco Lindor to some degree.
Both went into free agency coming off of successful years with the biggest question being the defense. Alonso’s next step is to become more of a DH while Bichette is trying his hand at third base. It does seem like both of their former clubs ultimately decided to move on. And this line, courtesy of Jays Journal where they cover the Blue Jays, could easily be replaced with the factors which match Alonso:
“While some fans may be hurt by Bo's decision to join the Mets, others have moved on and wish him the best and hope he has a long and healthy career.”
Each took the biggest contract offer they could get. Welcome to capitalism.
