The 2024 New York Mets playoff run was nothing short of spectacular. What was said to be a "punt year" or a year to "see what you have" turned into memories that fans will take with them forever. From 0-5 to OMG, they made it all the way to game 6 in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Who knows the Mets could have still been in the mix today if they won game 6 and forced a game 7 in L.A.? However, that is not the way the season played out and now having time to digest it all for a little over a week we can finally look back at the amazing moments that took place.
Don't be sad that it is over, rather be happy that it happened.
3. Edwin Diaz gets out of the jam and sends the Mets to the NLCS
After walking both J.T. Realmuto and Bryson Stott to give the Phillies a chance in the top of the 9th inning, Edwin Diaz had to settle in if he wanted to send the Mets to the NLCS for the first time since 2015. Diaz bounced back quickly striking out Cody Clemens on just five pitches.
He then got Brandon Marsh to pop up for the second out while Realmuto moved to third making the Mets just one out away from euphoria yet again. Kyle Schwarber stepped up to the plate as the final chance for the Phillies and struck out swinging, sending Citi Field into a frenzy.
This win was so important for not only Diaz but the Mets as well because they did not want to play a game 5 in Philadelphia. Diaz came through for the team in a big spot, despite his struggles here and there throughout the year.
Also, let's not forget that he had a rough outing in game 2 against the Phillies. He allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and played a factor in the loss that ended up tying this series at a game a piece. Diaz's massive turnaround boosted his confidence on the mound while also giving the Mets momentum moving forward.
2. Lindor's Grand Slam in Game 4 of the NLDS
Throughout the entire year, Francisco Lindor has constantly found himself coming up to the dish in major moments for the Mets. It happened against the Atlanta Braves to send the Mets into the playoffs and it was happening yet again as they looked to get into the NLCS.
The Mets had many opportunities to score leading up to this point but were unable to cash in with runners in scoring position. On the fourth pitch of the at-bat with the bases loaded and one out against Carlos Estevez, Lindor dealt some damage to right-center field.
In the words of Howie Rose the only way to describe this home run would be to scream out, "Francisco Lindor! He may have just outdone himself." Lindor sent jolts all throughout the stadium by hitting his second career grand slam in the postseason which put the Mets up 4-1 late in the game.
Although the Mets struggled against the Phillies with a 6-7 record in the regular season, they finally got to stick it to their division rivals in dramatic fashion. Their first postseason matchup against each other will be one that both teams will never forget.
1. Pete Alonso Keeps the Dream Alive
It looked very bleak in game 3 of the Wild Card Series as the Milwaukee Brewers had a 2-0 lead in the 9th inning with their star closer, Devin Williams, entering the game to get the final three outs. Despite being injured for a good chunk of the 2024 season, Williams had an incredible year posting a 1.25 ERA along with 38 strikeouts and 14 saves in 22 appearances.
The immediate thoughts are that the game is over when he enters to earn the save. However, he showed some signs of weakness by allowing the Mets to get runners on first and third with one out. Pete Alonso would then step up to the plate for what could have been his last at-bat in a Mets uniform.
Alonso found himself in a 3-1 count and on the fifth pitch he got something that he could drive as he sent it deep to right field to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. This was his first home run since Sept.19 as he stunned the Brewers to keep the Mets season alive. Alonso has had a lot of big moments with this team but none of them were bigger than this one. The rest of this magical playoff run would not have been possible if Alonso did not capitalize in this stressful situation.
Now that is all said and done, Mets fans should look back at the ride that this team took them on with a huge smile. They took leaps and bounds in this 2024 season going from 11 games under .500 to game 6 in the NLCS. The only thing that could be said now is that the Mets have a very bright future ahead of them.
