WAR is meant to tell a complete picture of a player’s abilities although it doesn’t always work. There have been plenty of former New York Mets players who, for one reason or another, either have an exceptionally good WAR or worse one because of one skill they have or lack. It would be pure opinion to name the best Mets players to also play for the Marlins and vice versa. Let’s do as the Romans do and let WAR decide.
The best Mets player by WAR to also play for the Marlins
Mike Piazza didn’t quite sneak in there. It might be for a lack of games as he played about 400 fewer for the Mets than the guy who does have this distinction. Jose Reyes and his 28.2 WAR is the highest among any Mets player who spent time with the Marlins. Just a single season for them in 2012, it was a good campaign coming off of a batting title. Piazza, of course, spent less than a week with the Fish back in 1998 before getting traded to our team.
The best Marlins player by WAR to also play for the Mets
Now this is funny. The best position player by WAR from the Marlins’ side of things is Luis Castillo. His 22.4 WAR tops runner-up Cliff Floyd by quite a bit. He’s at 16.9 for the Marlins. The two teams have shared plenty of players over the years. However, Castillo’s decade-long stint makes him the winner here. In the eyes of Mets fans, he’s remembered much less…oops I dropped the last word of the sentence.
The best Mets pitcher by WAR to also play for the Marlins
This one might deserve a little bit of a victory dance as he was traded directly to the Mets. Al Leiter and his 28 WAR accumulated during his time in New York is the answer. There aren’t many other starting pitchers in contention with many relievers as the next in the line of succession.
The best Marlins pitcher by WAR to also play for the Mets
By 0.9 WAR, Leiter falls in second place to AJ Ramos. You remember AJ Ramos with the Mets, right? Traded to the team at the 2017 trade deadline despite the Mets selling, he had a 6.6 WAR in Miami and a -0.4 WAR for the Mets in his brief 49-game stretch.
