The New York Mets are known for starting their seasons on the right foot by winning on Opening Day, but one of those games stood out as a good blowout victory. The best Mets blowout win in Opening Day history was against the San Diego Padres at Citi Field on April 1, 2013.
Mets best blowout win in Opening Day history was April 1, 2013
This was a game in which the Mets beat the Padres 11-2. The number of runs the Mets scored is the second-most of any Opening Day game in which they won, but it’s also the highest amount in which they won and blew out their opponent. The offense helped by getting off to a hot start, scoring a combined seven runs in the second, third, and fourth innings. They would then get a grand slam by Collin Cowgill in the seventh inning, which was the team’s first one on Opening Day in 30 years at the time.
The Mets pitching also shined. Jon Niese, the starter, looked sharp, allowing only two runs in six and two-thirds innings. The bullpen didn’t give up any runs or hits after Niese left.
This specific Opening Day game was the one in which most, if not all, Mets fans had high hopes for after finishing the previous season with a 74-88 record and in fourth place in the division. Although they would end up in third place with the same record in 2013, there was plenty to look forward to, such as Citi Field hosting the All-Star game and the performances of new players they acquired like Cowgill, John Buck, and Marlon Byrd, who all contributed in the 11 runs scored.
The Mets scoring 11 runs and allowing the Padres to score only two in that Opening Day game appeared to have set a spark to the beginning of their 2013 season. They went on to a 7-4 record by April 13, and the offense was hitting at least one home run in every game.
The Mets are currently 41-22 in Opening Day games. As good as their other season-opening victories have been, the blowout one in 2013 left a good impression.
