The best free agent each Mets rival is predicted to sign according to MLB Trade Rumors
What are the NL East rivals predicted to do this offseason?
Nobody puts together their offseason predictions better than MLB Trade Rumors. Their thorough write-up on each of the top 50 MLB free agents is a masterful piece of work every year. As out of the strike zone as many of the predictions end up being, they do make contact at times and the projected contracts typically are close enough. The New York Mets appeared in plenty of the predictions for this offseason. What about their rivals?
MLBTR believes the Mets will be one of the most aggressive teams this offseason. What about their NL East rivals?
Atlanta Braves will sign Danny Jansen
The 30th ranked free agent this offseason, Danny Jansen is as much of a household name as Voldemort is in the Harry Potter world. You see, he’s the one who shall not be named. The 29-year-old catcher is coming off of a poor season with the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox. He hit .205/.309/.349 with 9 home runs in just over 300 plate appearances. He hasn’t been all that much better in his career as a platoon catcher. He does make sense for the Atlanta Braves after they let Travis d’Arnaud walk away in free agency. If this is the best they do, it’ll be a disappointing offseason for Atlanta barring a major trade.
Miami Marlins will sign Kyle Higashioka
Another catcher off the board, the Miami Marlins get their catcher (finally) and it’s a good one. Mets fans know him well from his time on the New York Yankees. His last name flows off the tongue. A powerful season that included 17 home runs in only 263 plate appearances, he’s the 36th ranked free agent. He’d undoubtedly improve what was one of the worst positions in baseball last year, Marlins catchers.
Philadelphia Phillies will sign Clay Holmes
This comes as a bit of a relief. The mighty Philadelphia Phillies are, at least predicted, to settle with the 21st best free agent this offseason. Someone else we know well from his time in the Big Apple, he’d be a candidate to close for them out of a bullpen that seems to never fully earn the trust of fans. The Mets made sure of that in the NLDS. It’s a good prediction simply because there isn’t much else the Phillies will need to add other than a mid-level starting pitcher.
Washington Nationals will sign Pete Alonso
Hello, old friend. Not only are the Washington Nationals signing the best free agent among our rivals, it happens to be the one we’re most familiar with. Pete Alonso had three of the four MLBTR writers predicting he ends up in D.C. with the other believing he returns to the Mets. Ranked as the 7th best free agent in MLB this offseason, it’s an all-too-frightening reality that he could indeed end up in a curly W.
