Mets starting position players based on WAR
This is where things get a little more fun. The Mets have turned to mercenaries in recent years, making it impossible for anyone fresh to climb up the depth chart. The position players on our roster should be more interesting and a little different from last time. Here they are, not in a batting order, but by position. They’re only the starters so don’t fret when your favorite is missing.
C – Mike Piazza 24.6
1B – Keith Hernandez 26.6
2B – Edgardo Alfonzo 29.6
3B – David Wright 49.2
SS – Jose Reyes 28.1
LF – Brandon Nimmo 23.3
CF – Carlos Beltran 31.1
RF – Darryl Strawberry 36.6
DH – Howard Johnson 22.1
The addition of Brandon Nimmo to the starting lineup is fresh. Ranked 15th in franchise history in WAR and eighth among all position players, he is on a pace to be among the top 10 in this statistic by the time his career is over with.
The rest of the players offer no surprise. Howard Johnson conveniently becomes the DH with his ninth-place finish in WAR among position players. I kind of had a feeling this was the case already. It’s a good thing because the player right behind him is a guy whose glove you want on the field.
There are no surprises here and maybe only one or two spots you’d actually selectively want to change. Soon enough, you won’t have to. There are current Mets right there battling to make a future roster just like this. Let’s take a look at our bench and bullpen.
