There’s an awkwardness to trading an All-Star player. Just weeks after the individual is celebrating for how he began the year, he joins a new club. Since 1992, there are five examples of the New York Mets trading an All-Star player.

Opportunities don’t go back further because of the timing of the trade deadline which began on June 15. So someone like Tom Seaver in 1977, while the bulk of his games came as a member of the Mets, representing the Cincinnati Reds in the All-Star Game.

The last 5 Mets All-Stars traded in the same year

Carlos Beltran - 2011

We need to go way back to 2011 to find the most recent Mets All-Star player traded. Carlos Beltran was the National League’s starter at DH one week. Not long after, he was sent to the San Francisco Giants for pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.

Armando Benitez - 2003

When categorizing trades, this 2003 swap falls into a few unique categories. Closer Armando Benitez went from one borough to the next when he was traded to the New York Yankees for three prospects. An All-Star for the Mets that same year, he’d become more unique when the Yankees dealt him to the Seattle Mariners in August.

Rick Reed - 2001

A fascinating swap in 2001, the Mets traded All-Star starter Rick Reed to the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Matt Lawton. In need of a stick more than they did the arm, the Mets took a risk by dealing away a fan-favorite and reliable starter. In an unfortunate twist, neither ball club would end up making the playoffs.

Bobby Bonilla - 1995

There was All-Star baseball in 1995. Representing the Mets, Bobby Bonilla! It was actually one of his better seasons with the ball club. After hitting .325 in 80 games, he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles with a player to be named later for Alex Ochoa and Damon Buford.

David Cone - 1992

Easily the most impactful All-Star to get traded by the Mets was in 1992. David Cone went from the lowly Mets to the Toronto Blue Jays. This was an August 27th trade that brought New York Jeff Kent and Ryan Thompson. There is little debate about which team won this deal. Cone and the Blue Jays won the World Series.
