NY Mets fan detectives hoping Alex Bregman dropped a clue he's coming to Queens

We've all been watching too much CSI this holiday season to think there's anything here.

New York Mets fans grabbed a pipe, put a deerstalker hat on their head, and deduced Alex Bregman was definitely coming to Queens after a tweet he shot off yesterday.

All the free agent third baseman wanted to do was wish folks well. With 2025 so close you can smell its breath, the word choice of “amazing” had fans wrongfully coming to the conclusion that Bregman sent out a secret signal of his ultimate destination.

On a slow winter day, Mets fans were trying to drum up any rumors they could

There’s a bit more to this case than just some Mets fans (mostly) having fun with the word choice. Jett Williams retweeted it. Jon Heyman did what he does best and stirred the pot for a Scott Boras client.

Bregman to the Mets has gained some steam with the Houston Astros all but officially moving on from him. Right alongside Pete Alonso as one of the best free agent hitters this offseason, either one would be a match or the Mets. The long-discussed idea of moving Mark Vientos to first base if they signed a third baseman, in this case Bregman, remains in play. It’s a matter of the Mets deciding which player fits them better. The strangest part of it all is they are represented by the same agent, Boras.

The detective work on this one by fans on a slow Thursday after the Christmas holiday wouldn’t be enough for any District Attorney to take the case to court. It’s akin to finding a guy with a butter knife in his kitchen and believing he must have been Jack the Ripper.

Bregman’s tweet was probably not an intentional swerve of any kind. An example from last year that seemed a little more calculated came from Joc Pederson who posted on Instagram “It’s always sunny in Philadelphia” with a photo of himself and the Phanatic. Speculation ran rampant. It must mean something! Ironically, Pederson would end up signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the team that eliminated the Philadelphia Phillies from the postseason in October.

When the announcement of where Bregman signs is revealed, it’s not going to come from a cryptic tweet. If he really wanted to have some fun, he’ll tweet out lyrics to Empire State of Mind and fool some Yankees fans into thinking he’s going there.
