Who’s up for a challenge? Apparently former New York Mets pitcher Adam Ottavino is. Since leaving the Mets after the 2024 season, he has faced just 9 batters in the majors, retiring 5, walking 4, and adding his name to the list of players who had a forgotten reunion with the New York Yankees.
A regular contributor to SNY, Ottavino’s experience includes a resume with parts of 15 MLB seasons. The majority came as a member of the Colorado Rockies, 7, and it’s with the Rockies he might return; just in a new role.
Ottavino has apparently spoken to Rockies owner Dick Monfort about a job as the organization’s head of baseball operations.

Ottavino, a Northeastern alum who turns 40 this month, pitched in the majors as recently as April with the Yankees. He spent 2012-18 with the Rockies.

The Rockies have been one of baseball’s least secure clubs in recent years. Their ongoing search for new blood should be viewed positively by the fan base. They’ve lost 100 games in three straight seasons. The bottom fell out in 2025 with 119 losses. Their last winning season was in 2018.
While we’d normally think of a player like Ottavino to make his first transition into a coaching spot, head of baseball operations sounds a lot cushier and probably doesn’t involve quite as much time away from home. Beloved San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey stepped into the president of baseball operations role for the organization beginning with the 2025 season. Ottavino is a little more distantly related to the Rockies, last playing for them in 2018, ironically enough.
Ottavino has yet to officially retire although this conversation with the Rockies seems to suggest reality has bit him. He never latched onto another team after leaving the Yankees last season despite his experience and the competent pitching he gave the Mets in 2024 in a low-leverage role.
Stranger people have been hired for such an important role. Look no further than the Mets who hired a player’s agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, to control the team. If hired, Ottavino will need to bring a mop with him to Denver and prepare to become a punchline. Just because he’d strike out Babe Ruth every time he faced him doesn’t mean he’d be able to turn the Rockies around.
