3) Huascar Brazoban
Maybe it’s because we saw Huascar Brazoban already in action during the regular season that has him a little further behind Kranick in the eyes of fans. Brazoban wasn’t very good either, pitching to a 5.14 ERA in 21 innings of work. He had 14 walks and 17 strikeouts in his time with the Mets. It was a major disappointment based on what he did with the Miami Marlins prior to the trade that brought him to New York.
Whilst with Miami, Brazoban had a 2.93 ERA in 30.2 innings. Strikeouts came at a more regular pace of 10 per 9. Walks were at an incredibly satisfying 3.2 per 9. The spring performance featuring a 1.69 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 10.2 innings helped Brazoban win his way onto the Opening Day roster with some optimism.
Of course, it wasn’t perfect. He still walked 6 batters. An ineffectively wild Brazoban is one of the reasons that could send him back to Syracuse and off of the Mets roster. He’ll go head-to-head with Kranick competing for essentially the same role. Also able to go more than an inning at a time, every inning will count in this ongoing battle to stick around in the bullpen. Throw Reed Garrett in there too, but expect an extended leash for him based on his 2024 results.
