6 NY Mets players who failed to take advantage of their spring training opportunity

All six had a clear path to make the Opening Day roster. Each of them put together a performance not worthy of being one of the first 26 to break camp with the Mets.

5) Austin Warren

The decision to send Austin Warren to the minor league portion of Mets was made rather easily based on his spring performance. A decent enough addition through the waiver wire, he’ll join a whole bunch of relievers with some big league experience in Syracuse to provide the ball club with options further down the line. Warren might be last on the 40-man roster as far as importance goes. If you were going to list players on the 40-man roster who could be gone before even getting a big league inning, he’s right there at the top.

In 6 games and 6 total innings, Warren has managed to deliver a 6.00 ERA. It includes a hit per inning, 4 walks, and only 3 strikeouts. It’s a forgettable spring training performance that’ll have fans forgetting all about him as soon as Opening Day arrives and maybe longer.

Always an underdog to make the team out of camp, limited yet noteworthy big league totals should have him as a candidate to climb the depth chart. He’s 6-0 with a 3.14 ERA in 48.2 big league innings. A ground ball pitcher who hasn’t struck out a whole lot of batters, it’s important to not get caught up in simplistic numbers like his ERA in Syracuse. A 4.04 ERA in Triple-A over a span of 100.1 innings, he should be a capable arm in the minors but maybe not so much in a larger sample size at the MLB level.
