5 NY Mets trade deadline predictions 2.0: Freddy Peralta return, Bo Bichette, Braves and Phillies

Every hour of every day seems to bring some new ideas of what the New York Mets can, should, will, won’t, might do at this year’s trade deadline. It’s different when the team is selling as opposed to buying. The targets are usually more obvious than the destinations.

Last week, we took a look a first round of predictions. While some of those remain the same, some have changed. Let’s five fresh ones based on how things are trending.

Five new Mets trade deadline predictions

1) The Mets get three players for Freddy Peralta

It won’t be a simple one for one or even a two for one deal which sends Freddy Peralta somewhere (your guess is as good as mine). Instead, the Mets take the approach of going after quantity versus quality because the latter won’t be available to them. Someone with high velocity, a former organization top 10 prospect, and maybe a second-generational talent with one exceptional tool and four more to work on seems like a fitting offer.

2) Bo Bichette trade rumors aren’t as buzzy as they should be

Because of the contract, Bo Bichette trade rumors never really take off. He becomes a forgotten trade candidate even with multiple teams in contention needing a shortstop or third baseman. This leads to many more questions down the line for the Mets in terms of where he fits into their future. Certainly a fit to return, it’s a topic of conversation after the dust settles post-trade deadline.

3) The Pirates trade for Huascar Brazoban

The Pittsburgh Pirates need some help and the bullpen is where it should begin. They don’t quite seem ready to make a contention for a world title. This is why trading for a controllable piece seems to fit them well. With Huascar Brazoban, they get an older pitcher with talent they can rely on this year and maybe a few more. In the swap, the Mets get a satisfying Pirates prospect whose internal ranking and minor league stats help convince every fan this was a worthwhile endeavor. Maybe they even pick up a second player, too.

4) The Mets make at least one trade with the Braves or Phillies

It seems way too convenient that the Mets have what the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies need. Pitching, of course, is something nearly every club could use. The Mets will sell at least one of their players on an expiring contract to Atlanta or Philly. In three years, we remind them of what they gave up when one of the prospects added makes his MLB debut.

5) The most surprising Mets rumor is a failed attempt to send Sean Manaea elsewhere

We will get our Sean Manaea trade rumors, but it won’t amount to anything. The overpriced and questionable veteran of the starting staff will remain with the Mets past the trade deadline despite some rumblings about maybe a random trade to the Toronto Blue Jays or maybe even a three-way deal involving the San Francisco Giants. He’ll pitch well down the stretch and a story in October for one contender will be “why didn’t the team spend to take Manaea away for free?”
