As the holiday season approaches, New York Mets fans dream of roster upgrades in several areas. With the offseason in full swing, here are five potential additions that could make a joyful time of the year for Mets fans everywhere.

Following the historic signing of Juan Soto, Mets fans eagerly await several roster moves to put their championship hopes in place for next season. As the holiday season unfolds, here are the five most coveted additions that Mets fans dream of receiving as a gift.

5) A significant addition to the bullpen in high-leverage situations

The New York Mets have made significant strides in recent years to build a competitive roster. However, one area that continues to need improvement is their bullpen, particularly in high-leverage situations.

During the 2024 season, the Mets' bullpen struggled significantly in high-leverage situations. From the seventh inning on, they posted the eighth-worst ERA in baseball and the second-worst walk rate. Additionally, their bullpen allowed the seventh-most home runs in these crucial innings, highlighting their vulnerability in high-pressure moments.

The bullpen showed improvement since the trade deadline, especially in the eighth and ninth innings, thanks to the addition of Ryne Stanek to the pitching staff. This indicates that the Mets require several quality relievers to bridge the gap with Edwin Diaz, particularly considering the current rotation's tendency for shorter outings.

Reed Garrett and Dedniel Nunez are the Mets' best bullpen options in the high-leverage situation right now, assuming Nunez is healthy enough to last the season. Ryne Stanek looks like a top choice to return to the Mets' bullpen, but the Mets should also consider other names with acceptable track records and stuff to add this offseason.

The first of them is Kirby Yates, a 38-year-old veteran pitcher who has battled multiple injuries during the final stretch of his career but who is an elite pitcher when healthy. During 2024, Yates managed to finish with a 1.17 ERA, a 35.9% strikeout rate that is in the top 2% of the league, and the opposition hit a wOBA of just .186 off him, impressive. At Yates' age, his signing could be a one-year deal and he would be the best bullpen option behind Edwin Diaz.

Along with Yates, the Mets should also consider signing Hoby Milner, a left-handed reliever from the Milwaukee Brewers who posted a not-so-flashy ERA of 4.73 but advanced metrics show him with an xERA of 3.24. Milner excels at two key aspects: his ability to limit walks and induce weak ground-ball contact, primarily through his effective use of a sweeper and sinker.
