How will the Mets replace Pete Alonso? These free agents are all realistic yet far from perfect.

3) Eugenio Suarez - The Non-First Baseman

This would be a little out of left field considering Eugenio Suarez hasn’t played much first base in his career at all. As an emergency option at third base, he could bring the Mets some added versatility they never were able to receive from Alonso.

Suarez is the best remaining slugger in free agency. Smashing 49 home runs last season, his reign of terror in MLB has routinely had him finishing with some of the best power numbers in the game.

Of course, he comes with a lot of strikeouts, a low batting average, and not such a great OBP to justify all of the strike three calls against him. Suarez is also 34. Giving him a 3 year deal would kind of go against the Mets’ stance and come across as hypocritical. Why pay him and not Alonso five?

This may only work if Suarez settles for a one or two-year deal. I don’t see it. Someone else will give him the three years. Suarez will take his power to somewhere other than Queens and we shouldn’t blame the Mets for passing on him.
