February 1 - The Mets trade for Nick Pivetta

It won’t end up being the blockbuster we wanted with the San Diego Padres. However, the Mets and Padres do end up striking a deal on a smaller scale. The longer this trade seems to take to develop, the less faith I feel it’ll end up being a major blockbuster. They begin February by making a trade to acquire Nick Pivetta.

The cost won’t be detrimental to the Mets’ future. After waiting nearly all offseason to add to their rotation, they settle on a deal with the Padres who continue to spend in other ways to improve their roster while also eliminating payroll in other spots.

Pivetta comes to the Mets out of some frustration from fans who were hoping for more. But with the Milwaukee Brewers holding onto Freddy Peralta and the Detroit Tigers disinterested in selling Tarik Skubal, the Mets push for their Pivetta addition.

A solid innings eater since 2021, the Mets add a guy who can improve the rotation to start the year. They bank on Sean Manaea returning to form, Nolan McLean avoiding a sophomore slump, and Clay Holmes and David Peterson proving to be more durable. The Pivetta addition leaves room for a midseason rental which they’ll surely be in on if they are competitive.

What do the Mets give up? For the sake of some consistency, let’s say it’s Mark Vientos plus a pair of prospects on the tier of Zach Thornton, Jonathan Santucci, or Will Watson. Considering the Mets have brought in Hays with no plans of him finishing the year as the starting left fielder, they have even less of a need for Vientos who gets a chance to play a little more regularly in San Diego.
