Every major move often has some sort of ripple effect. When it comes to the New York Mets’ signing of Bo Bichette, it sends an entire tidal wave through the system.
Internally, a lot of players are affected by the addition. Third base has been a constant battle for the Mets among multiple players. Taking the majority of playing time there away from others will undoubtedly create some additional upheaval within.
It’s these five Mets players who suddenly feel like they could be destined for something else.
1) Brett Baty
Well, obviously. Brett Baty was the starting third baseman for the Mets until this signing. Do they move him? There are arguments for and against it.
Baty showed us last year he is more than a third baseman. He played regularly at second base. Reviews were mixed. A part of the argument in trading him is he has value right now and multiple teams who’d have interest could give the Mets pieces they’d love to have to fill roster holes of their own. Arguments against? Baty can be incredibly useful in a part-time role and maybe even a first base solution at times.
If the Mets are bold enough to play Jorge Polanco at first base and Bichette at third base, why not Baty at the former? There are at-bats for him. He’d be the first choice to replace every infielder other than Francisco Lindor.
Baty’s future changed a lot with this signing, more so in the immediate than long-term. The same is absolutely true for the man whose spot he seemed to steal last year, Mark Vientos.
