2) Luisangel Acuna
The Mets can either buy into what Luisangel Acuna gave them in September of last year or sell him while the hype has returned. Briefly the organization’s number one prospect once he was acquired at the end of 2023 from the Texas Rangers, a rather pedestrian performance in the minors in Double-A and Triple-A had him falling on most lists. He ended up on the team in September for 14 games where he hit .308/.325/.641 with 3 home runs. It was a nice change from the .258/.299/.355 he hit in 587 trips to the plate in the minors.
Acuna has the ability to be an incredibly useful player for the Mets this coming year. Whether pushed into the starting second base role or utilized as more of a utility man, he’s a candidate to help round out the bench. He has a minor league option remaining which, once used, will start to eliminate any true trade value he can have. The Mets will need to decide quickly if he is a part of their future or not.
Turning 23 in mid-March, Acuna has age on his side. He might not have impressed much in the minors last year, but that deadly speed which has swiped 97 bases over the last two seasons is tough to pass on at the right price. If all the Mets view him as is a speedy utility player, swapping him now for something that can help them at the major league level is the right move to make.
