5) Ronny Mauricio

It has been a quiet offseason for Ronny Mauricio. He feels a little safer and maybe that’s only because the clear solution to any questions with his immediate future is to send him to the minor leagues. The Bo Bichette contract has set up well for him to further grow into a competent everyday third baseman, spending this coming year in the minors at times and majors in other moments.

The Mets could also always trade him. There’s a lot they can do with him. He has the built-in versatility the Mets are now only trying to teach to Baty. They don’t have to choose between the pair quite yet, but that time is fast approaching.

Baty’s development as a potential regular rover around the infield and left field does give Mauricio more clearance to eventually become the starting third baseman. He has a lot more to prove. His bat and glove have some catching up to do. The 2026 season is his opportunity with a huge fight ahead of him due to the lack of obvious opportunities.

Trading Mauricio is quite different from dealing away Baty or Vientos. It doesn’t create a major league roster hole. Matches are far more abundant as he could be viewed as minor league depth in the interim.

Any of those same Baty and Vientos destinations are a match for Mauricio. Other teams could include the Miami Marlins, Minnesota Twins, and Seattle Mariners. Narrowing down trade scenarios for Mauricio is difficult because he is as much a match for a 2026 contender as he is for a team looking to rebuild. If the Chicago White Sox had anything left to trade the Mets, they’d be another club. Let’s get nuts and say the Tampa Bay Rays are a match for some inconceivable trade involving a pitcher coming to New York.
